| When I was asked to be a judge in this years pageant my first reaction was excitement but then despair. I thought how can I do this? And why would anyone want me to do this? The way I was raised by my family was to never judge anyone, but to accept and embrace people for who they are. How in the world was I going to score one person over the other? To say this was agonizing for me in an understatement at best. When I decided that I was going to go through with this, I made a promise to myself that I was going to do my very best to be as fair as possible. I took this job very seriously. I could easily see how important it was to all the contestants. This was their dream and they would be counting on me. My greatest hope is that everyone realized that the opportunity to compete was much greater a gift than the end result of the contest. While is is true that some will win and some will lose, I really don't look at it that way. Character is built through experience. It is very important for all of us to learn something about ourselves, and hopefully to use that knowledge to judge ourselves. It really isn't all that important whether you won or lost the contest because someday when we leave this world most will remember who we were based on how we made a difference. Now looking back I am very happy that I was gifted this opportunity. I am taken aback by all the incredibly nice people I had the good fortune to meet. This includes everyone from the staff other judges to the contestants and there families. The hard work and dedication and support by all could never be "judged". To say the least I was in awe. Thank you so much for the opportunity to part of your lives. You are all very special people. | Mike Vande Ven......2006 U. S. Beauties National Pageant Judge |
