Mrs. Washington U.S. Beauties Shallon

  Inspirational Quote

Success Story

I have always admired the women I saw in pageants wearing their elegant gowns and posing in their swimsuit perfect bodies.  They were beautiful, well spoken and incredibly talented.  In 2005, I tipped the scales at 309 pounds. I was pre-diabetic, had high blood pressure and was a candidate for a heart attack or stroke. I had a crazy kid schedule, poor eating habits, sleep deprived, financially unstable, too tired to exercise, and hated what I saw in the mirror. I tried fad diets but I felt lost, a prisoner trapped in my fat and everyone had advice but no matter what I tried, it didn't work. I found every excuse not to address my problem until I heard from my doctors that my obese condition was life threatening.

I surrendered to my weight and decided I had to change so my family would have a mom to grow up with.  I consulted with my family doctor and he got me started in the right direction.  I found an activity I could stick with, a gym for my family, then a trainer, and a little at a time my diet changed and then my weight started to come off. A little at a time my family and I changed our habits and tried healthy things.  We set goals as a family like no fast food for a week, having my family shop and cook together, and taking walks together on nice days. My girls began to measure how much weight I was loosing by hugging me and when their fingers could touch, then their hands, and then wrists.  Their excitement drove my efforts.  I entered my first pageant November 2006 at 230 pounds hoping to be motivated to a goal of 140 pounds by June of 2007. I enjoyed my workouts and the results and began to appreciate and respect what I saw in the mirror.

My family, friends, pageant participants, competitors and complete strangers from my gym watched and were amazed as I shrank.  I began new friendships with people whose lives and goals intertwined with mine and we found strength in each other.  I educated myself using magazines, the Internet, my trainer and a nutritionist about food, the human body, dieting, and exercise to sculpt a new look for my forty something body, fitness goals and my family.  I have made so many friends and assisted them with paths of their own, making lifestyle changes to achieve their own success and given them hope for a healthier longer life. As a title holder, I have many opportunities to share my story, assist my community with nutrition, health and physical fitness goals and encourage others to be the best they can be.
