Success Story

Greetings! I’m Michelle Miss Land of Lincoln U.S. Beauties 2010.

I couldn’t be more excited about how this pageant focuses on the successes of the modern woman! I feel it is a movement in the right direction in support of women around the world, for women of all nations, creeds and religions. How is success measured and what standard of measurement is to be used? Is it ones physical beauty? Her skills of dance, music or the arts? Perhaps it is her successes in the work place? I purpose it is more encompassing. Having the ability for these aforementioned talents is not to be dismissed, it is to be added upon and taken to another level of depth and a more meaningful purpose of life. A great starting point is giving service in the community which you live.  Every person has something to share and is of great worth.  We all have time, talents and resources.  May I suggest we tap into them and step outside our comfort zones and engage in volunteering at any capacity.

Success to me is making a difference for good in the lives of others, no matter what degree.

This past March I attended the Commission on Status of Women at the United Nations where I participated in forums involving organizations from around the world. CSW is a functional commission of the United Nations Economic & Social Council ECOSOC. At the UN leaders met to evaluate gender equality, identified challenges, set global standards and formulate concrete policies to promote gender equality and advancement of women worldwide.

I've heard the concerns and heartfelt needs of women from around the world. My compassion for service has been magnified and so has my goal to promote community involvement and volunteerism.

I have been in the shoes of a full time working mother, and still providing compassionate service at any given opportunity. The role of women is changing as the economy changes and as the world shifts. With these changes there will be even more need, more opportunity, and more personal, spiritual and emotional growth in those who choose to serve. Each person has the choice and ability to help lift the life of another.

My favorite quote is “When you are in the service of your fellow beings, you are in the service of your God.”  I hope to always live by those standards, and to guide my life with compassion for others.

Today, while in the service of my fellow beings, I lost myself.

My emotions are close to the surface today after my visit to The Children's Memorial Hospital, Brown Life Family Center. In my previous blog I briefly shared that I am involved with the United Nations and The Worldwide Organization for Women. The grand experiences of touching lives on the international level is not to be dismissed, but today my thoughts are focused on local community service and how each of us can touch the lives of others and those that are in our local vicinities.

The center was quite busy this day, which was both good and bad. Good that the children were feeling well enough to get out of their rooms and enjoy the atrium with sunshine, and maybe play a few games or color a few pictures. Bad because today there were so many little children in there with their own stories, own difficulties and challenges of life threatening illnesses that one can only imagine how they are living their lives with such strength and courage.

Many of us have personal trials or challenges that fit into a huge range of intensity, some may seem unbearable at times and some of these challenges may last much longer than we care for. Today, while in the service of my fellow beings, I lost myself. I lost myself in the story that a mother told me today about her son Dylan who is 4 years old, as he and I played with the train set trying to taking his mind off his medical condition of an intestinal transplant which happened about 3 months ago. Dylan is deaf, and has some physical disabilities which made it hard for him to stand at the train table. His mother who is a pretty woman with a simple accent from some distant country told me that she has been with him for 3 months there and staying at the center that the Memorial Hospital has set to help families in need. She is single with this one son, who is fighting for his life, and she is glued to his side, loving and caring for him to the best of her ability.

No longer did thoughts of personal mishaps cross my mind, but compassion and love for the people I was lucky enough to be serving. What would this world be like if even more of us chose to serve more often, even in the smallest capacity? I couldn't imagine a more fulfilling, more rewarding component. I lost myself today in service and it was wonderful!

Giving Back to others is an experience Miss Land of Lincoln U.S. Beauties Michelle recently felt deeply about as she volunteered at The Childrens Memorial Hospital, Brown Life Family Center.
