 Success Story

April 7, 2008 I was standing in formation in the 71st Basic Law Enforcement academy doubtful, due to co-workers saying I would never make it, I was ready to train. The bar was set high and the rules were strict. Only the strong survived and the weak was let go over the 21week period. With a 100% standard for written test, scenarios and performance test. I endured over 800 hours of grueling exercise mental and physical, which lasted over 100 days combined with nights. I put my all into my training there were a lot of sacrifices to be made, this occupation is very demanding and it can almost be difficult for a single parent. The most painful sacrifice was sending my four year old son, who is my heart to his grandmother. My son had never been separated from me, and his grandmother lived an hour away. I couldn’t see him everyday however, I remained mission focused. On August 29th, 2008 it was the day of my graduation. It took everything to fight back tears, as the bag pipes were being played and my name was called to walk across the stage and shake the hands of the line of sheriffs and chiefs that congratulated me. I made it!! By my hard work and determination and I was ready to launch my career, and make another sacrifice, myself to serve and protect others as a commonwealth police officer.  I had already been on patrol for several months. I was put abruptly on a walking beat, seven days a week in the downtown area of the city, eight hours a day. I was put with a senior officer and I was advised the next training class would be in December.

I decided to go back to college get my degree in criminal justice. And it’s the best thing I could have done, that police department helped me more than harmed me. All my training wasn’t in vain after all. I have applied what I’ve learned to my studies and I’m excelling in my classes. The end of November, I will be done with my second semester, I have begun my internship and I love it. It’s in probation and parole the gang unit and I will be graduating April with my associate’s degree. I will hopefully have that job in probation and parole by that time things are looking good. I plan to go back and get my Bachelor of Science degree in my major. The thing I took from the police academy and that whole experience, that will stay with me is never quit, don’t give up as long as I’m alive, keep fighting get knocked down get back up. And sometimes you must fail in order to be successful. If one thing doesn’t work try something else. That has helped me get over the difficult times I am in a much happier place in my life. And I am a woman that knows what she wants and where she’s going I’m moving forward and not looking back.
