Mrs. Texas U.S. Beauties Christy

Inspirational Quote

It doesn't matter what others think about you...it matters what you think about yourself."

Sucess Story Soon

I could say that one of my successes is losing 87 pounds and keeping it off since 2003, I could say that another success was being inducted into the Wall of Tolerance for my stand against hate and injustice. And one of my proudest successes is to represent the great state of Texas in the US Beauties pageant. Although each of these milestones are things that I have worked hard to achieve, I feel that my success story begins and ends with how I make people feel each day.  I want to be the kind of person that can take someone’s bad day and turn it into a positive just by a simple gesture. This is just one of the many reasons why I love doing appearances and being Mrs. Texas US Beauties. It’s an amazing feeling to go to an appearance and see the faces of children and even adults light up just because I came to visit. But in all actuality, it’s my face that lights up when I see them.

At a recent appearance at the Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital, there was a little girl no more than seven years old who was suffering from a serious head injury she sustained in a car accident. Due to the severity, she had to wear a full body brace which was attached to her head with screws. She couldn’t walk so she was limited to a wheelchair. This didn’t stop her from participating in arts and crafts though. In fact, she was so excited for the arts and crafts portion because she wanted to make a paper tiara. So that is just what we did. We made a tiara out of construction paper and stick on jewels, she said that she wanted it to look just like the real one that I had on. After we had finished her tiara, I let her put on my Mrs. Texas US Beauties sash so she could feel even more like a princess. We took pictures and she had the time of her life.

When it was time for me to leave, she gave me a big hug and told me she loved me. A few months later I had learned that this sweet little girl had passed away. A few weeks later, I received a letter from her Mother. In the letter she told me how much her daughter loved the paper tiara we made and how she wouldn’t stop talking about me even weeks after the appearance was over. It’s amazing that I had such an impact on this little girl in just the few hours we spent together.  The fact is though, she is the one that had the impact on me and I am grateful. She made me appreciate life on a higher level and see things in a way I hadn’t before. As I mentioned, we only spent a few hours together, but that just shows how impactful such a short time can be.

A quote that reinforces how I want to live my life is:

“That I expect to pass through life but once.  If therefore, there be any kindness I can show, or any good thing I can do to any fellow being, let me do it now, and not defer or neglect it, as I shall not pass this way again”.  ~William Penn

Success can mean different things to different people. Success to me means that at the end of the day, I know that I tried my hardest, loved as much as my heart could and did the right things for the right reasons.
