NEWAYGO — As a woman who wears many hats, it wasn’t until four years ago that Sharolyn Metternich decided to run for the U.S. Beauties Mrs. Michigan crown, and in January she added the crown to her wardrobe.

The title complements an already lengthy list that includes daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, hunter, angler, gardener, singer, advocate and spokesperson. I saw a national competition on TV and thought ‘I can do that,’” Metternich said. “four years later, I became Mrs. Michigan.”

Metternich, 44, who lives in Newaygo, is using her newfound fame to promote her platform called “Stepping Out,” which focuses on having fun in the great outdoors.

“I want to encourage women and children to get outside and try Michigan’s outdoor activities, such as hunting,” Metternich said. “I’m very much an outdoor girl. The biggest part is getting people to realize that you can still be a girly girl and hunt.”

The oldest of three girls, mother of three, and grandmother of three, Metternich has taught her children sportsmanship as her parents taught her.

“I’m sure my dad desperately wanted a boy, but he got three girls,” Metternich said. “I’ve been hunting since I was a little kid, so it’s a big part of my background. My passion for hunting just grew and now I’ve taught my kids and they’ll teach theirs someday.

“Part of it is just being out there and seeing things that you don’t normally see. I’d actually like to have a hunting TV show someday.”

Metternich uses her newest designation to raise support for causes such as Hunt for a Cure that researches ways to cure cystic fibrosis. She also takes part in Sportsmen Against Hunger and the Wild Turkey Federation’s program, Women in the Outdoors. In addition, she started the Queen’s Garden Project, which encourages people to grow a couple extra rows in their gardens and donate the produce to local food banks.

Admittedly shy as a youth, Metternich says that, surprisingly, her favorite part of her new role is the people.

“Meeting different people and going to different events is probably the best part, especially seeing the kids – probably because I miss my grandchildren.”

As for the future, another venture Metternich may pursue is a place in politics. In 2008, she was runner-up for the seat of Croton Township treasurer.

“When I ran for office, I realized how much work goes into it and learned a lot about the process,” Metternich said, “but I am thinking about it.”

I strive to have a positive attitude and work towards my own personal growth and development. My faith in God gives me strength and keeps me grounded. As a community member, I realize the importance of community service and use my time and talents to make a difference in the world around me.

My family is my greatest success and my legacy. I have been blessed with a wonderful and caring husband, three beautiful children and three adorable grandchildren. Their love and support has allowed me the opportunities to serve others and work with many different organizations.

To me, success has been this incredible journey~ not the ending destination!
